Blinds are one of my favorite choices for dressing up windows because they are just so very stylish and modern (depending on the blinds that you choose). This article is a must read if you are about to buy some blinds for the very first time. The art of choosing blinds is a little more tricky that choosing curtains. It pays to do a little research in the type of blinds that you would like to buy.

There are generally two types of blinds. There is the common blind (that is a combination of many strips) and shades. Common blinds give you much more control over the light and airflow. Other than that your choice between shades and blinds is largely a matter of taste and preference. Blinds are made from a variety of materials and each would have a very different effect over a room. Materials such as wood, aluminum, bamboo, plastics and even fabrics are common used to make blinds. If you are looking to create a warm and cozy ambience, it is best to use wood, bamboo and fabric blinds (unless you are buying the advice of an experienced interior decorator). Plastic and aluminum blinds tend to have a ‘colder’ feel, which are more suited for office and industrial places. For homes, vertical blinds work the best as they elongate a space. I personally feel that blinds look very boring and dull. Another important factor to take note of with blinds is that they are quire high maintenance (compared to the upkeep of curtains at least). You have to be careful to keep the blind’s pulley system in good working order (it is sometimes quite troublesome to fix a broken pulley system). As durable and aesthetically pleasing they are, these are the necessary evils that come with blinds and shades. |
